Hands on Atlanta

This year marks the 17th annual ServiceJuris Day. ServiceJuris was designed specifically for individuals or groups that work in or support the legal services industry. Each year, these members join forces and volunteer one day of their time for a service project coordinated by Hands On Atlanta. The event was created to foster interest and involvement from the legal community in a non-legal service project. Ona Saturday morning in June, hundreds of volunteers gather to serve communities’ critical needs.

Attorneys, summer associates and legal professionals work side by side tackling extensive renovation projects and helping to revitalize local schools, parks and community centers. Over its 16 year history, nearly 6,400 volunteers have contributed more than 23,000 hours of service –enriching the learning environments for more than 4,500 public school students, renovating 9 neighborhood parks and enabling more than 12,000 people to utilize their community centers.

ServiceJuris will serve the Clarkston community, a city is noted for its ethnic diversity. In the 1990s refugee resettlement programs identified Clarkston as a good fit for displaced persons of many backgrounds. Residents were moving farther out from the Atlanta urban core, and Clarkston was the last stop on a transit line into the city. By the 2000s the local high school had students from more than 50 countries; a local mosque had 800 worshipers; and by some estimates, half the population was from outside the U.S.
